Climate Action. How You Can Contribute as an Individual.

Climate change is unequivocal, and we need to act fast to reverse and reduce its impending impacts. We are faced with the possibility of intense droughts, storms, devastating floods and wildfires, if we keep going at this rate towards the dreaded 2oC global warming levels due to the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

This seems scary but if we take a step back and look at it again, we will realize that there is a lot we can do to as individuals to change this narrative.

Certain narratives downplay the contributions individuals can make towards climate action but

Here are some ways you can contribute to climate action as an individual.

Be a Climate Ambassador.

By being a climate ambassador, you will advocate for climate in your daily activities prioritizing climate consciousness. You will carry your shopping bags, join a car pool, turn off electricity when not in use, use water wisely and stop scrolling the internet mindlessly.

Switch to a renewable energy if you can, by install solar panels. Buy the most efficient products, as this will save you energy and money.

Once you’ve mastered living more sustainably, it’s time to take that message outside of yourself. Take the message to your family and friends, encourage them to reduce their carbon footprint in loving ways to bring them on board the fight against climate change. It is estimated that as much as 20 per cent of global carbon emissions could be reduced if 1 billion people took action.

Keep up the Political Pressure

Keep up the pressure on politicians to deliver their mandate on climate action. Policies on climate change should be adhered to and not just be documents on the shelves. Let us demand accountability on climate action from our leaders to make sure they are delivering on their promises. This year (2024) has been a year of mass elections with about 64 of countries holding their election which is about 49% of world population voting.

You have a role to play in shaping policies that can affect your countries` sustainability agenda, as such it is important that we see ourselves as key stakeholders and play our role. Let climate change and sustainability be a deciding factor on your votes.

Also participate in your local governance. Put yourself up for leadership in your local area, group or even workplace where you can have the authority to drive and implement climate decisions. It might seem intimidating but your voice deserves to be heard. Politicians must be part of the solution, if we must win the climate change fight. Therefore, if we want the change why don’t we put ourselves in positions that enable us to proffer solutions?

Encourage Business Sustainability

It is essential that we encourage businesses to be more sustainable and pressure unsustainable businesses to delve into sustainable practices. It is estimated that 71% of all global emissions are being created by 100 companies. This shows the importance of businesses in driving climate action. We should buy from businesses that have sustainability certifications, those that use sustainable practices throughout their supply chain, and those that use sustainable packaging etc.

The fashion industry is one of the leading carbon emitting industry. It contributes about 8 to 10% of global carbon emissions. But we can change this. Buy fewer new clothes and wear them longer. Seek out sustainable labels and use rental services for special occasions rather than buying new items that will only be worn once. Recycle pre-loved clothes and repair when necessary.

Plant Trees

Deforestation has been the leading cause of global carbon emissions. We can all pay a part in reverting the effects of deforestation by planting and nurturing trees, either individually or as part of a community.

This will enable us to protect land and sea as well as ecosystems and biodiversity.

Support Groups and Organizations

You can contribute to climate action by joining groups and organisations that are working in this regard. There are so many organizations doing amazing work which also help to influence policy. Some of these organisations are Earth Justice, Rainforest Alliance and World Wildlife Foundation.

Simply put live a sustainable lifestyle and you will be fighting climate change. My hope is that after reading this article you feel empowered to effect changes in your lifestyle and realize how much change you can create as an individual!
