Breaking Up with Plastic: Earth Day 2024’s Call to Action

Plastic has totally taken over, right? I mean, you can find it pretty much everywhere! It’s everywhere because it’s cheap and easy to use. From storing leftovers to keeping our meds safe, plastic’s got us covered. And it’s not just convenience; it’s a game-changer in how we do things, saving us money along the way. But here’s the flip side: all this convenience means we’re drowning in plastic waste because we’ve been using it like crazy. And you know what that means? Yup, a whole lot more plastic waste piling up over the past six decades thanks to our love affair with plastic.

Concerns have been raised by individuals, organisations and governments worldwide on the seeming plastic takeover. The UN treaty on plastics is expected to be decided by the end of 2024, with about 170 countries pledging to decrease their plastic consumption by 2030.

The 2024 earth day themed “Planet vs. Plastics” advocates a healthy planet and a 60% decrease in plastic production by 2040. Earth day is observed on 22 April of each year and aims to create awareness on environmental conservation and sustainability.

As we celebrate 2024 earth day themed “Planet vs. Plastics” let us all as individual contribute to reducing plastic pollution by engaging in the following

Bring Your Own Bag: Grab some reusable bags next time you head to the store. Keep them in your car or bag so you have them handy when needed.

Say No to Single-Use Plastics: Skip the plastic straws, bowls, and cups when you can. Swap out those disposable plastic bags and wraps for reusable containers when packing up leftovers or lunches.

Choose Products with Minimal Packaging: Opt for products with minimal or eco-friendly packaging whenever possible. This helps cut down on unnecessary plastic wrapping and containers.

Join Clean-Up Efforts: Get involved in local clean-up events to help tackle plastic pollution in your community. Whether it’s a beach clean-up or a neighborhood litter pick-up, every little bit helps!

Make a pledge: You can pledge with your family, friends, or on social media to reduce the usage of  plastics in your home.
